Indian Petrochemicals Corporation Limited (IPCL) was a pioneering Indian petrochemical company established in 1969 as a Government of India undertaking. Headquartered in Vadodara, Gujarat, the company played a significant role in developing India's petrochemical industry and promoting the use of plastics and synthetic materials across various industrial sectors. IPCL was an integrated manufacturer of petrochemical products, including polymers, synthetic fibres, fibre intermediates, industrial chemicals, catalysts, adsorbents and polyester products. Its major manufacturing facilities included integrated petrochemical complexes at Vadodara in Gujarat, Gandhar near Dahej in Gujarat, and Nagothane in Maharashtra. Its product portfolio included polyethylene, polypropylene and polyvinyl chloride, which served as essential raw materials for packaging, construction, agriculture, automotive components and industrial manufacturing.
With its extensive manufacturing infrastructure, technical expertise and nationwide distribution network, IPCL contributed significantly to the growth of India's plastics and chemical processing industries. The company also supported the development of downstream industries and entrepreneurs by making petrochemical raw materials more widely available. In 2002, the government divested a substantial stake in IPCL to the Reliance Group. Subsequently, IPCL merged with Reliance Industries Limited in September 2007, integrating its petrochemical operations into one of India's leading industrial groups.
